Hot

No threat of rain but it is hot. The air is humid-hazy but the sun beats down. I did not count, but I'm sure everyone in Beijing is in Tienimen Square and The Forbidden City today. Actually, maybe more than that due to the hundreds of tour buses that have brought visitors from out of town. Umbrellas of all colors and shapes shade the harsh sun. For a short while we take refuge from the heat in The Great Hall of the People which is monumental, overscale, and time-frozen in the 1960's.

In the park later everyone is busy - playing cards,  ballroom dancing, playing music, even an older gentlemen reciting what sounded like Chinese rap. But the highpoint is a group of 50 or so singing patriotic songs with much enthusiasm and nostalgic tenderness. Mao would be proud, but this is not his China anymore.

Going back, we pay about two dollars for a 25 minute taxi ride but much of the time is spent standing still. Our hotel is a traditional courtyard home - hundreds of years old - in a neighborhood that avoided the urbanization craze that destroyed much of old Beijing. Now buildings are being renovated for shops and bars, but funky charm is the norm.  To the Great Wall tomorrow.

Beijing

We are here, and just a little jet-lagged. Saturday night in the middle of summer is busy-busy. Walked a lot getting to dinner via a very long route,  it that gave us a chance to see more, right? Lisa looks happy to be almost back to the hotel.

Seventeen Pounds?

I always bring a lot of stuff when I travel and vacillate between being proud and embarrassed. I do have a fantasy of taking a trip sometime with nothing except a point-and-shoot camera and two changes of underwear, but this is not that trip. I usually fiddle with trying out new gadgets to travel with and this trip is no exception. Camping in the countryside for a week will be a big challenge this trip, so I am bringing a rechargeable battery pack to keep devices powered up - this accounts for almost three pounds. Also trying a new hand held Polaroid photo printer to leave behind snapshots of people that we meet. I realize that what I gain by having the lightest equipment available is lost by having so much of it - oh well.

I weighed all this at 17 lbs. but it doesn’t look so bad if you photograph it all packed up.

    Green Light

    I've got everything covered - I think.
Double checked flight status online and all seems well.  Remembered there was a flight schedule change a while back, so emailed the hotel in Beijing with schedule change info and they confirmed they will send a driver to get us. Called our guide in Beijing on his cellphone and he confirmed that he picked up our train tickets from the ticket agent where we booked online. Got an email from our Mongolia tour company with cell phone and email contact info for their guide who will meet us at the train station.

    What could possibly go wrong?
(my attempt at humor, but the response is unanimous that you do not tempt fate, even in jest)

    Everything is under control !
