Swakopmund
is certainly a complete departure from the rest of the trip. We go out
to dinner in the deserted town and have a reservation in a classic
German restaurant in what must be the premiere hotel in town. A little
disconcerting after several days 'off the grid'. The disorientation is
reinforced by the image of the all white clientele and the all black
staff - remains of the colonial period that did not go away. I find
myself just a little bit uncomfortable. We stay at a place near the
water, elevated on pilings, with all the modern amenities. For the first
time in a while the cell phone signal is strong enough to upload travel
blog stuff.
We go on a boat trip to see the sea life - cape
fir seals, pelicans, and shore birds. A little sunburn completes the
day. This is a layover on the trip and we all look forward to what is to
come.
